Image Format Converter — Frequently Asked Questions
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. The image is decoded by your browser, redrawn on an HTML canvas and re-encoded locally. Nothing is transmitted — you can even use the tool offline once the page has loaded.
Why does AVIF or BMP sometimes come out as PNG?
Encoding support depends on your browser. Chrome and Edge encode AVIF; Firefox and Safari may not yet. When the browser can't encode the requested format the tool falls back to PNG so you still get a usable file — check the output badge for the actual format.
What does the quality slider do for PNG?
Nothing — PNG, BMP and ICO are lossless, so the slider is dimmed for them. It only affects JPG, WebP and AVIF, where lower values mean smaller files with more compression artefacts.
Why did my transparent PNG get a white background as JPG?
JPG has no alpha channel. To avoid black boxes the tool fills transparent areas with white when converting to JPG. Choose WebP, PNG or AVIF to keep transparency.
Is there a file size limit?
Only your device's memory. Very large images (over ~50 megapixels) can be slow or fail on phones; use the Scale option to shrink them first.
Can I convert multiple images at once?
Not yet — this tool is deliberately single-file so it stays fast and simple. Drop the next image onto the source pane to replace the current one.
