FAQ

Image Compressor — Frequently Asked Questions

Does compressing reduce image quality?

Lossy formats (JPG, WebP) trade a little detail for a much smaller file. At quality 70–85 the difference is invisible on screens. PNG is lossless, which is why the tool offers to convert PNGs to WebP — the only way to make them meaningfully smaller without reducing dimensions.

How does Target size work?

Type a size in KB and the tool binary-searches the quality setting (up to 7 encodes) until the output lands at or under that size. If the target cannot be reached at minimum quality, it also lowers the dimensions and tells you.

Why is my PNG not getting smaller?

PNG is lossless, so the quality slider does nothing to it. Turn on Convert PNG to WebP or set a max dimension. Transparency is preserved in WebP.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The image is decoded, resized and re-encoded with the Canvas API inside your browser. Nothing is transmitted or stored anywhere.

What is the maximum file size?

Up to 50 MB per image. Very large images (over 50 megapixels) can exhaust mobile browser memory, so the tool also caps the longest side at 8192 px during processing.
