How It Works

How to Compress a Video in 3 Steps

1

Drop a Video

Drag an MP4, MOV or WebM onto the left pane. Duration, resolution and size show in the header, and the toolbar estimates the output size for the current settings.

2

Pick Quality or a Target Size

Choose Small, Balanced or High, or type a target size in MB and the tool works out the bitrate. Lower the resolution for the biggest savings on 4K phone footage.

3

Compress & Download

Click Compress. Encoding runs at playback speed — a 2-minute clip takes about 2 minutes. Preview the result, check the saving, then download.

FAQ

Video Compressor — Frequently Asked Questions

Why does compression take as long as the video?

The browser re-encodes by playing the video onto a canvas and recording it with the built-in MediaRecorder, which works in real time. It is the only way to compress video without uploading it or shipping a 30 MB encoder. Keep the tab in the foreground while it runs.

How accurate is the target size?

Within roughly ±10%. The bitrate is calculated from your target and the duration; encoders are variable-bitrate so the final file can land a little above or below. Set the target 10% under any hard limit.

Will I get an MP4 or a WebM?

MP4 (H.264) in Chrome, Edge and Safari; WebM (VP9) in Firefox and older browsers. Both play everywhere that matters — WhatsApp, iMessage, Slack, YouTube and all modern browsers.

Is the audio re-encoded too?

Yes, to Opus or AAC depending on the container. Choose "Keep · 64 kbps" for voice recordings, or "Remove" to strip audio entirely from screen recordings and B-roll.

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. Decoding, scaling and re-encoding all happen inside your browser with the Canvas, Web Audio and MediaRecorder APIs. Nothing is transmitted or stored.
