How to Play Tic Tac Toe in 3 Steps

1

Pick an opponent

Play the computer — Easy picks random squares, Unbeatable never loses — or choose 2 Players to share one keyboard or touchscreen.

2

Take turns

Click or tap an empty square, or press 1–9 like a phone numpad (7 8 9 on the top row). X always goes first unless you change it in the options.

3

Three in a row wins

Line up three horizontally, vertically or diagonally. The tally of wins, draws and losses is kept on this device only.

FAQ

Tic Tac Toe — Frequently Asked Questions

Can the computer be beaten?

On Easy it plays random legal squares, so yes. On Unbeatable it uses the minimax algorithm to look at every possible continuation, so the best you can do is draw — try taking a corner first.

Why do 1–9 feel upside down?

The keys follow a phone or numpad layout: 7 8 9 is the top row, 4 5 6 the middle and 1 2 3 the bottom, so your hand position matches the board.

Who goes first?

X by default. In the options you can let O start or alternate the first move every game; in two-player mode Player 1 is X and Player 2 is O.

Where is the score saved?

Only in your browser's localStorage, under the key toolity_tictactoe: wins, draws and losses per mode. Nothing is sent anywhere; Reset or clearing site data removes it.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. The board scales to the screen, squares are large tap targets, and two people can pass one phone back and forth in 2 Players mode.
