GIF Speed Changer — Frequently Asked Questions
Is my GIF uploaded anywhere?
No. The GIF is decoded with your browser's built-in ImageDecoder (or a small JavaScript decoder on older browsers), the frame delays are rescaled, and the result is re-encoded locally in web workers. Nothing leaves your device.
Why isn't 10× or 0.1× available?
The GIF format stores frame delays in hundredths of a second and most browsers clamp anything under 0.02 s to 0.1 s. Beyond about 4× the frames can't get any shorter, so the animation stops speeding up — the presets stay within the range that actually works everywhere.
Why did the file get bigger after a slow-down?
Slowing down doesn't add frames — the file size shouldn't change much. But re-encoding always rebuilds the colour palette, so a GIF that was heavily optimised by its original author may grow a little. Pick '480px Max' or '320px Compact' to shrink it.
What does Color Sampling Quality change?
How many pixels the encoder samples when building the 256-colour palette. 'High Quality' checks every pixel (slowest, best gradients); 'Fast' samples one in ten (quick, slight banding). 'Balanced' suits most GIFs.
How large a GIF can I process?
Up to about 50 MB. Every frame is held in memory as raw pixels, so a 500-frame 800 px GIF needs roughly 1 GB of RAM — phones may run out. Resize to 480 px if processing stalls.
Will the GIF still loop?
Yes. The output is written with an infinite loop flag regardless of the original's loop count.
