FAQ

Favicon Extractor — Frequently Asked Questions

Where does the favicon come from?

From Google's public favicon service (google.com/s2/favicons). It crawls and caches site icons, which is why it works even for sites that block direct hot-linking. Toolity never proxies or stores the image.

Why does the icon look blurry at 256px?

Google only has the sizes the site actually publishes. If a site ships a 32px favicon and no touch icon, the 256px request is upscaled. Try 128px or 64px for a sharper result.

Can I paste a full URL instead of a domain?

Yes. Paste https://github.com/profile/settings and the tool extracts github.com automatically. A leading www. is removed as well.

Is it legal to use another site's favicon?

Favicons are usually trademarked brand assets. Using them to link to that site, build bookmarks or dashboards is normal practice; using them as your own brand is not. When in doubt, check the brand's usage guidelines.

Why did the download fail but Open works?

Browsers block scripts from reading cross-origin images, so Download routes through a public image proxy. If the proxy is slow or blocked by your network, click Open and save the image from the new tab.
